The Bel Air Nomads were the lowest produced variations of all of the Tri-Fives.
In 1956 there were only 8,103 total Bel Air Nomads out of 1,623,376 total Shoebox's built that model year.
The Nomad was a proto-type that debuted as a Corvette Nomad at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City for General Motors Motorama in 54'.
It has been called the WALDORF ever since.
As a large success and huge hit the unique features were applied to a Chevrolet Belair two-door station wagon and put into production as a Nomad in 1955.
The bodies were made at the Cleveland plant, and where then shipped to the Flint, Baltimore, St.
Louis, Tarrytown, Atlanta, Kansas City, Oakland, Los Angeles, Jamestown, Willow Run, and Norwood plants for assembly.
An offshoot of the indomitable Tri-Five Chevy, the Nomad was the perfect combination of utility, style, and performance.
Still sporting many of the forward-thinking design elements from the earlier concept envisioned by Harley Earl when it appeared in production form for 1955, the Nomad nonetheless shared its chassis with the '55 Chevy sedan rather than the Corvette that inspired it.
The Nomad is holding strong is a pretty clear example of the Tri-Five Chevy's strength as an established staple in the collector market, but also of the sheer desirability of a stylish wagon with Corvette power.
Some things don't change.
Nomads were cool then, and they're cool now.
